Sunday Stash - Baggage

I finished up two projects this weekend, with potential to finish up a 3rd.  I don’t want to put the cart before the horse, so I’m just counting the two for now.  The first is a tote bag that will be raffled off at the Cotton States Cat Show next weekend.  I used some 16 patches I made as leaders and enders and added in additional squares of coordinating colors to make the ears for this cat totebag.

The baby quilt is currently in the wash, so I’ll get pictures of it when it’s done.  For now, I’m heading back to the sewing machine to quilt more on the Split Nine Patch.

Sunday Stash - Charity Case

Is anyone else’s guild discouraging the use of the word “charity” in regards to donations? That has popped up in several areas of my life and I have apparently turned into an old fart who is set in my ways and can’t change my vernacular. Pardon me while I write this while sitting on the davenport, drinking a hot toddy and contemplating hemlines above the ankle.

NOTE: None of those things are true. Except the ankle thing - why do we need to show so much leg? Imagine how much more quilting we’d get done if we weren’t worried about personal grooming on our calves.

Anywho, this week I had to veer off course as I wanted to finish some “community benefit” projects. Or whatever the heck I’m supposed to call the 6 placemats for Meals on Wheels and 2 pillowcases I finished.  I do have two quilts sandwiched and ready to quilt, but those will have to wait until I finish a Seekrit Project for someone.

10690062_10154845349465657_3023901802061887496_nHere’s a previous Seekrit Project I finished that was debuted last night: a fancy flapper dress for a cat! The silent auction last night was “The Great Catsby”, so we were all encouraged to dress in 20’s theme. The model is Tricky, a cat that lives at Good Mews Animal Foundation; she was the victim of domestic abuse seven years ago and is paralyzed from the waist down.  Because the shelter has such awesome donors, they are able to keep her in diapers and pay for her many medications.  She was wheeled in as guest of honor in a wagon draped in velvet and fringe- quite the entrance!

Owly Images

My own “costume” took some liberties since I stuck with a black dress I already had and added some flapper-esque accessories like a headband and a TON of eye makeup. Gah. Reminded me of high school band flag corps when I had to wear enough eye makeup to be seen on the 50 yard line from the stands!

Alas, no yardage used in my or Tricky’s costume since none of it was quilting fabric!

Sunday Stash - Retreat Roundup

UntitledIt was a Very Productive Weekend! Beyond the two quilts I finished at retreat, I also got two tops (and one back) pieced, as well as 11 journal covers to be donated to Wellspring Living.

This is a fun chevron baseball quilt I’m making on commission- I got the top and the back pieced, and will get it quilted in the next week or so.

Here’s my Kimberly Einmo Lone Starburst quilt top.  I added the piano key border at the top and bottom so it wouldn’t be square.  My friend Judi saved my bacon and loaned me fabric to add the background border so I could finish the top.  It was one of two things I managed to forget for retreat - that an my E-Z Angle ruler. It will get backed with minky and be another couch snuggling quilt for my living room.

UntitledAnd finally, here are the journal covers I made for composition books.  Wellspring Living requested some journal covers for the girls in the recovery program since they do a lot writing in the rehabilitation process, so I used a tutorial had written up a couple years ago to make most of these.

    • 1.75 yd for 11 journal covers

Sunday Stash - Prep Mode

I’m still mostly in prep mode for retreat, but I did manage to finish the second version of the Great Getaway Bag.  This one is getting donated to East Cobb Quilters Guild for their auction at the quilt show next June, and I’ll post pictures next Friday (as a scheduled post since I’ll be at my retreat!).

I also buckled and bought a layer cake of a new Basic Grey line named “Persimmon”.  While I was perusing it and decided between a layer cake and a jelly roll, I managed to talk at least 2 or 3 other guild members into buying some pre-cuts of it as well.

We also did block pick up for Saturday Sampler this weekend, and I got both of mine whipped up this weekend. The Mum Medallion (on the left) is the same design as a previous block that gave me issues, but this time I figured out how to make it without the experimentation of before.  Make a 4″ finished HST of orange/green or mulberry/green, and then sew a 2 1/2″ square of the opposite color onto the green half. No specialty ruler needed!

  • Used this Week: 3 yards
    • 3 yd for another Great Getaway Bag
  • Used year to Date: 274.75 yards
  • Added this Week: 2.75 yards
    • 2.75 yd of a layer cake of Persimmon by Basic Grey

  • YTD Used for Charity: 105.5 yards (38% of total used)

Sunday Stash - Panels and Blocks

I’m gearing up for my retreat in a week and a half, and have been busy assembling project groups and boxes and whatnot.  I think the most daunting is the collection of “stuff” for fabric postcards, but here’s hoping I remember to pack the different colored thread for it!

When I haven’t been making piles of stuff, I’ve been working on my Lonestar blocks from Kimberly Einmo’s class on Saturday. She’s a lovely, energetic teacher and I love her pattern writing.  I also about two books, a specialty ruler, AND a pressing gadget.  I rarely buy books and gadgets, so you know she’s good! I’ve managed to make the units for 6 out of 9 star blocks, but haven’t finalized my layout yet.

I also made a pillowcase and finished my 3rd panel quilt project (three more are going into the aforementioned postcard projects!) Woohoo!

Sunday Stash - Bag Lady

A couple finishes this week with the 5 pillowcases I had cut a few weeks ago and a yard and a half for the lining of a big old bag I’m doing  a pattern review on.  I’ll have pictures of that to show in October.

I also got Allison’s quilt top for the Twilter Round Robin, and knew exactly what I wanted to do, so I got that finished as well!

And then we had Saturday Sampler block pick up, so I knocked those out as well. And I picked up the sashing kit for Mum Medallion, so that added some yardage, but also some leaders and enders to piece together another top from a Christmas panel.

Sunday Stash - More Thread Than Fabric!

One finish to report this week as I just put the final binding stitch on my panel challenge entry! And a not-quite-finish as I log some usage for the Twilter Round Robin that I’m shipping out shortly.  I’ll have pictures of the panel challenge posted closer to my guild meeting (Oct 5), but if you attend the East Cobb Quilters Guild night meeting, you’ll get to see it then in a sneak peek!  I feel like with all the quilting in it, it would have logged more thread than fabric.  Thank goodness I’m not trying to track that!

Owly ImagesAlthough I just used one panel for a challenge, I got drawn into purchasing another panel at the AQS show in Chattanooga on Saturday.  One booth had a panel of cats pictures with a rescue theme, which is perfect for making fabric postcards for the Good Mews holiday market.  I also dove in and bought a FQ selection from Cherrywood fabrics because of the yummy colors.

The darker orange and tan on top are extra ones to round for a project the bundle is inspiring me to do. You’ll note, of course that this bundle matches: 1) my new purse which also matches a) Nina and b) my new kitchen color. So, yes, I’m in a turquoise & orange era. And I might be doing a Nina portrait quilt. And while I was planning this, I sort of got Lynn to get a bundle as well that matches her dog Josie.

And then I talked Lynn into getting a backpack pattern and kit. And we both talked each other into some patterns for various baskets and bags. And then I test drove some long-arms. More on that on the next podcast!

Sunday Stash - I’m Kind of a Big Deal

Um… so my “Every Comment on Every Quilt Blog Ever” funny post went viral thanks to Bonnie Hunter and Quilting Gallery.  And Missouri Star Quilt Company.  Yowza! My excuse for not finishing more things this week is that I was busy moderating comments! Yeah, that’s why!

Only “finished” project this week was the bag I pattern tested, and expect to post pictures of this week. My Autumn Splendor panel challenge is still being quilted, and I hope to finish it this week. My friend Judi from guild gave me some fabric this week to make things for Good Mews, so when I say, “Thanks, Judi!”, I mean it both genuinely (for the generosity in helping the shelter) and sarcastically (for messing with my stash numbers!).  She knows the facial expression I’m giving her for the sarcastic one. ;-)

I did use that fabric to cut enough for 4 pillowcases I’ll donate to see at the “Meowiday Market” for the shelter in December, and use the rest to make fabric postcards.  I discovered in sorting through my holiday fabric for other postcard ideas I have about 5 more (Christmas) panels I forgot about, which, GAH.  Why do I buy panels? Why does anyone? I could totally blow out this guild panel challenge, that’s for sure!

  • Used this Week: 2.5 yards
    • 2.5 yd for Rockstar Bag
  • Used year to Date: 254.75 yards
  • Added this Week: 4 yards
    • 4 yd of cat-themed Christmas fabric (thanks, Judi!)

Sunday Stash - Finally!

The Birdie quilt is done! And I forgot to take pictures today! Oh well, tomorrow is a holiday so I’ll try to take them then.  I’m also about halfway through with a bag test pattern, which I think I’ll get done tomorrow, too.

Big progress on the Wellspring quilt front - all tops are done (last one shown to the right), two of final four are done, one still being bound by guildmate and one will get returned to me for binding. Final stage is affixing the labels to 29 quilts, and I’ll stitch five of them on myself.

  • Used this Week: 6 yards
    • 6 yd for Birdie quilt
  • Used year to Date: 252.25 yards
  • Added this Week: 0.25 yards
  • Net Used for 2014: 169.75 yards

Sunday(ish) Stash: Appearance of Progress

Still no finished quilts this week, but fabric left the stash for projects that are being finished by others.  We’re in the final push to finish the 29 quilts for the Wellspring Living recovery house (they help girls rescued from human trafficking), and we were three quilts short.  That means crunch time to put them together!  The guild received a grant to help with the project, so we’ve used every last penny from the funds to buy a 20 yd bolt of Kona Snow, two layer cakes, and backing fabric to meet our commitment.

Two of the three are giant disappearing four patches, and the final is a big old checkerboard pattern with Kona Snow opposite 9″ blocks in a variety of designs that came from my stash - strings, 4 patches, 9 patches, giant HSTs, etc.  So, the fabric from my stash was for those blocks, and the binding for 4 quilts (another member had parts for a top that I finished on Thursday, but it lacked binding).

A big shout out to my guildmates who joined me in the sweatshop this week to make these quilt tops! Now we need to channel our energy to propping up Lynn, who is quilting all four (well, after I get her the final top on Thursday!). Sadly, no pictures of anything because the lighting was not good, so I’ll try to get pics when they are all done and bound.

And because I felt like being a little selfish, I made two luggage tags on Saturday at retreat as well. WOOOOO!

  • Used this Week: 4.75 yards
    • 2 yd for binding for 4 quilts
    • 2.5 yd in blocks for Wellspring top
    • 0.25 yd for luggage tags
  • Used year to Date: 246.25 yards
  • Added this Week: 3.5 yards
    • 3.5 yd for bag test pattern
  • Net Used for 2014: 162.75 yards
  • YTD Used for Charity: 96 yards (39% of total used)
