Oh hai! My son was sick and I'm late recording. That does not, however, stop me from talking about woodworking, Christmas projects, maligned fabric, and charity projects.
This week, I finished the quilt for our niece's wedding.
Here's a close-up of the quilting I did within the larger squares. Proof that you can free-motion feathered leaves that don't suck - if I can do it, you can too! Given a do-over, I would have used a darker backing fabric. Ah well, live and learn.
Of course Zapper helped me when I was quilting it.
Here are the 3 quilts I made out of the maligned country fabric. I feel better about it now.

If you ever get more border print you are not sure of what to do with it... a great technique / pattern is by Kay Nichols ONE FABRIC WONDER.
THEY ARE BASICALLY quarter square triangles cut from a strip ... cut into equal size blocks (fussy cut or not), layer four blocks ..then cut quarter triangles. Take a stack of four quarter triangles (cut together)... Sew them together into a block .. square them up and they make interesting all over design quilts.
I usually make mine by stacking like strips of the stripe to develop interesting patterns. If you have the fabric on the repeat you get..kind of a Kaleidoscope look mirror image blocks.
If I do not have enough fabric for an entire quilt I use coordinate fabric as alternate blocks. Simple Shapes, Simple sewing fast easy quilting projects.

Another really cute pattern that is easy to make is FOUR PATCH (POSIE) KALEIDOSCOPIC SQUARES. You layer four repeats of fabric on top of each other. (FLORAL WORKS BEST) Based on the repeat whether it is 12 inch or 14 inch or even 23 inch you determine the size of patch you will cut. Biggest size of patch is about 5 inches but I found 3 inch and 4 inch patches work best.
You stack the four repeats of your fabric then baste them together cut the fabric into patches. Taking each stack of patches you decide how to sew them together.. this is the fun because you get to decide how the patches will go together to make the prettiest blocks. SEWING IS JUST A BASIC FOUR PATCH. After you have your blocks they can be placed in a number of different settings.
I frequently take donated fabric and make these basic four patch blocks for our charity sewing groups. I get the fun of making the block ... but they usually make the quilt tops.

I have a picture of my upscale idea of this quilt block on my blog. It is similar to the blocks I make for 4 patch blocks. One of these days I will put a tutorial up but not any time soon... too many other projects need to be finished.
