Sunday Stash: Now on Monday!

I realized as I was laying in bed last night (trying to beat the latest level of Candy Crush) that I had forgotten to do my Sunday Stash report. Oh well! As Blanche Devereaux says, “Better late than pregnant!”

Since two of my Memorial Day Sew In projects were finished on Monday, they count towards this week’s usage, AND I finished my Saturday Soiree quilt from Tiny Stitches.  I also finished a quilt for Wellspring Living, but it was a top and back from someone else’s stash and I was just quilting and binding it to finish it.

  • Used this Week: 14.5 yards
    • 1 yd for iron caddy
    • 1 yd for Sew Together bag
    • 12.5 yd for Saturday Soiree quilt
  • Used year to Date: 187.25 yards
  • Added this Week: 1.5 yards
    • 1.5 yd from a guildmate’s destash
  • Net Used for 2014: 116 yards
  • YTD Used for Charity: 56 yards (30% of total used)

Sunday Stash: Charitable

Woohoo! I broke 100 net used yards for the year thanks to two charitable finishes this week! One is Half Notes, which will be donated to local child protective services, and the second is my second Quilt of Valor finish. I’ll have pics once I get them washed and dried.

I’ve got my demo blocks prepped for the disappearing nine patch presentation I’m giving next weekend, and all of those will go into three more charity quilts (all for child protective services).  I think I’ll finish up the top for the Broken Lone Star next.

  • Used this Week: 14.75 yards
    • 5.75 yd for Half Notes quilt
    • 7 yd for Quilt of Valor
    • 1 yd for QoV presentation case
    • 1 yd for pillowcase for daughter’s friend
  • Used year to Date: 172.75 yards
  • Added this Week: 0 yards
    • Woohoo!
  • Net Used for 2014: 103 yards
  • YTD Used for Charity: 55 yards (32% of total used)

Sunday Stash - Pending Whammy

QoV 2Big weekend for sewing around here with my day retreat yesterday!  I managed to finish two tops: one for Quilts of Valor, and Saturday Soiree, for my daughter’s bed.  The Quilt of Valor is to the right - it measures around 60 x 72″.  I’ve still got to piece a back for it and make the label for it.

I didn’t get a picture of my Saturday Soiree complete top as I was holding it up at retreat and couldn’t take a picture of it myself, and there’s not enough floor space open in my house currently due to a surplus of train track villages laid out in the living room. BUT! It’s gorgeous so you’ll have to trust me on that until I get it quilted and show pictures of the finished quilt. It’s a generous full/queen size, I think.

I’ve also been working on my disappearing nine-patch demo pieces (20 patches complete for one demo, still need to finish cutting for the other demo), and got all the HSTs done for the donation quilt I’m making out of those brown triangles I had cut.  The center is almost complete for that quilt. Whew!

My one yard of usage is for a gift I made as part of a bridal shower gift, and I’ll show pictures of that item after the shower.

  • Used this Week: 1 yards
    • 1 yd for bridal shower gift
  • Used year to Date: 158 yards
  • Added this Week: 0 yards
    • Woohoo!
  • Net Used for 2014: 88.25 yards
  • YTD Used for Charity: 42.25 yards (28% of total used)

Sunday Stash - Unfinished Business

Blammo! Not a single sewn thing officially finished this week. I can live with that, especially since I did get sewing done, but not yet finished.  Here are this month’s Saturday Sampler blocks from Tiny Stitches:

Mum Medallion - Block 5  Saturday Soiree- Block 12
This is the last month for Saturday Soiree, the blue and white quilt.  I’ve got my sashing and setting kits sewn up for this quilt, so I’ll work on putting the top together at my guild’s day retreat next Saturday. It’ll end up being a big old mamma-jamma queen/generous full size and will go on my daughter’s bed since blue is her favorite color.

I also took some time to do a fundraiser for Good Mews and went to a “paint your pet” night at a local painting place called Canvas by U.  Here’s the original photo of Nina I worked from (the ladies at the store did a pencil sketch on canvas to start us off), and here’s the resulting painting:

Sunday Stash - The Unempty Saddle

I managed to pull off finishing the Swoon quilt on Saturday, and have gotten back in the saddle on my Broken Lone Star quilt today.  I’ve finished 8 of the 24 outer blades, and have started on the final 16.  I also decided I was not happy with my choice of brown for the background fabric despite already cutting out the pieces, so I found a very soft dove gray that’s somewhere between the Grunge print from Moda and the linen print from Kaufman; I think it will really set off the rainbow colors in the star.

In addition to the gray, I got the final finishing kit for Saturday Soiree and the final block for the quilt. Once I get the block made this week, I can get the top put together.  I’m super excited for it to be done for my daughter’s bed, as blue is her favorite color.

Owly ImagesI’m also counting the 5 yards of fabric I’m sending out with my Round Robin block as “used”.  Whatever I get back at the end of the process I’ll check back into my stash, I guess, so since I usually only count fabric that’s in a finished item.  Here’s a sneak peek of my center block and the fabrics I’m sending along for guidance (plus a couple yards of white on white background fabric).

  • Used this Week: 15 yards
    • 10 yd for Swoon quilt
    • 5 yd for Round Robin supplies
  • Used year to Date: 157 yards
  • Added this Week: 6 yards
    • 3 yd of gray for background for the Broken Lone Star Quilt
    • 3 yd for borders & binding for Saturday Soiree
  • Net Used for 2014: 87.25 yards
  • YTD Used for Charity: 42.25 yards (28% of total used)

Sunday Stash - Getting My Fix

Owly ImagesNo logged usage this week, although there has been progress on a couple things.  I’ve got all  9 of the Swoon blocks pieced, with no small thanks to Jett who held them down for me in between stitching.*

*Very small thanks, indeed.

I also put together a little art piece to show at the Arts Festival I’m presenting at Thursday at my kids’ school, but no pics of that until it’s done. It needs thread painting and stitching, and right now just looks like a blob. Or a couple blobs.

I had a gift certificate burning a hole in my pocket, so I went ahead and spent it on some fabric for the quilt for the Good Mews auction this year. I found a cute cat print to use as a border and some coordinating FQs

  • Used this Week: 0 yards
    • Sad trombone!
  • Used year to Date: 142 yards
  • Added this Week: 6 yards
    • 6 yd for charity quilt

Sunday Stash - Scrapidoodle-doo!

Well, Scrapideux is done, and it is QUITE bright.  Here it is in during basting:

Owly Images

I have a special plan for it, a bit different than I talked about during the podcast. I’ve gotten started on a replacement for the gift quilt I originally planned this one for that’s a little more subdued (well, a LOT more subdued) and more appropriate for the intended recipient.

  • Used this Week: 10.25 yards
    • 10.25 yd for Scrapideux quilt
  • Used year to Date: 142 yards
  • Added this Week: 0 yards
    • Woohoo!
  • Net Used for 2014: 84.25 yards
  • YTD Used for Charity: 42.25 yards (30% of total used)

Sunday Stash - Junk in the Trunk

Seat cushionJust a smidge of usage logged this week as I only finished a small project: a cushion for my office/sewing chair.  I used this tutorial for “Junk in the Trunk” seat cushions from Sew Sweetness as a general guide for putting the extra cushy “biscuits” together for the top, and then winged the rest based on experience and gumption. And the amount of scrap foam I had on hand.

It’s not my finest upholstery work, but then again, it’s something that my butt will touch every day (as I use this chair to either work or sew every day).

Lone star center

I also had a class on the Quiltsmart Lone Star technique this afternoon, and managed to finish 8 out of 32 “blades” in the class.  I’m doing a broken Lone Star design, so there will be a ring of blades outside this center star as well. To pick my colors, I’m channeling my inner Lisa Frank/Rainbow Bright, the outside blades will go from chartreuse to purple, as below.  I toyed with the idea of the text print for the background fabric, but ultimately decided that trying to get the text to align and all face the same way might drive me batty.  I’m going with a solid brown for the background instead, which made the colors pop when I held it up next to the center blades in class.

    • 1.5 yd for the seat cushion

Sunday Stash - Skirting the Issue

This week I rewarded myself a bit with a smidge of fabric. Some of it will be used to make a skirt as I need to build my wardrobe up for the warmer months since my old pants literally fall off of me. Not complaining, mind you, but I still hate clothes shopping!  The other intake is the second of three finishing kits for Saturday Soiree, the blue and white quilt.

  • Used this Week: 6 yards
    • 5 yd for the Periodic Table quilt
    • 1 yd for 2 pillows to coordinate with No Scrap Left Behind
  • Used year to Date: 130.25 yards
  • Added this Week: 4.5 yards
    • 1.5 yd for fabric for a skirt
    • 3 yd for setting kit for Saturday Soiree
  • Net Used for 2014: 72.5 yards
  • YTD Used for Charity: 42.25 yards (32% of total used)

Sunday Stash - It’s the Little Things

The Quilt of Valor finish was the big one for this week, although the two storage bags contributed nicely as well. I also did two small projects, the Charm Dude, and a mini quilt gift for someone I’ll show a picture of once I think they’ve received it.

I also got the top finished for my Periodic Table quilt, and am working on piecing the back today. It’s going to be Roy G. Biv inspired to keep up the science theme.

  • Used this Week: 8.75 yards
    • 6 yd for the Quilt of Valor
    • 1 yd for QoV storage bag
    • 1.25 yd for No Fabric Left Behind storage bag
    • 0.25 yd for the Charm Dude
    • 0.25 yd for mini-quilt gift
  • Used year to Date: 124.25 yards
  • Added this Week: 0 yards
    • Woohoo!
  • Net Used for 2014: 71 yards
  • YTD Used for Charity: 42.25 yards (34% of total used)

And because it’s the end of the quarter, here’s a graph! I’ve been thinking I’ve been behind my usage from previous years, but a quick glance tells me, no, that’s not the case, despite the yardage grab of the Super Bolt sale!
