WIP Wednesday - Fancy AND Schmancy

I’ve been working on the Broken Lone Star quilt, and have made a fair bit of progress.  I started with some flames in the center medallion.

And then added some smoky bits in the background area with some helpering.

And then added the “cool” flames.

And last night I finished the smoky bits in the outer background. Now for the final touches just outside the outer smoky bits. Which I haven’t figured out yet.

I’m also working on quilting Mum Medallion, so here’s hoping I can finish one of these before the bell tolls midnight on 2014!

Sunday Stash - The Home Stretch

I forgot to account for the intake of the “friend of the guild’s” de-stash last week, which I estimated at about 15 yards or so, so that’s in this week’s numbers.  I used a good bit of that to whip up some pillowcases for ConKerr Cancer, and I’ve also got a couple charity quilts cut out and using as leaders and enders while I sew other things, but those finishes probably won’t hit until January or February.

I whipped up a couple more postcards this week, which means I’ve made around 70 of them this year.  61 are getting donated to the East Cobb guild for their show in June, and I sold some for Good Mews and kept a couple for myself.

I also had the last bits of Christmas presents in the finishes this week, including a Minecraft Wolf pillow for my daughter (I’ll post pics of that in a separate post - Santa needed some help with that, but if I start taking pictures of it when she’s around she might get suspicious!), and the Sew Together bag and the nativity bunting for my MIL.

Not included in stash numbers, but done this week is step 5 for the Grand Illusion Mystery Quilt. It was an easy week this week, and the math is keeping me guessing - it feels like this will be set on point with a checkerboard border somewhere?

If I can knock out a couple projects by New Year’s Day, I can bring my net 2014 total up to 200 yards. I’ve got a full-size quilt that might do it, combined with some other smaller projects. Fingers crossed- I’ll do my year-end stash tally on New Year’s Eve or so, complete with graphs!

HtbaS - Episode 208

This week, I talk about Christmas! And the new (to us) truck and a new vacuum. And a new tire. It’s all going pear-shaped around here.

Here is the playlist of videos of Jett and Morelli at the shelter when they were kittens:

WIP Wednesday - Not So Much WIPs as FOs

I would have considered these works-in-progress if I had remembered to take pictures as I was sewing them. As it is, you’ll have to settle for some finished projects on WIP Wednesday!

Both of these are gifts for my MIL for Christmas.  They don’t count as “last minute” since we don’t exchange gifts with them until Saturday at the family celebration.  First up is a Sew Together bag; I think this is my fifth (or sixth?) time making one of these, so it went pretty smoothly.

Sew Together Bag for MIL Sew Together Bag for MIL

What’s not so smooth is a glaring typo that I now can’t unsee - instead of “spool”, it has “snool”. Which… okay Japan. You go right on designing your crazy fabric.

Kati tried to convince me that it’s a European style of script, but I find her logic suspect since it’s a Japanese fabric! Ditto for Tina who said that’s how her many-greats grandmother did it.

Side note: we have a lot of fun on Instagram if you haven’t found me there already. It’s still a lot of cat pictures, but I’m sure you’d expect that of me.

Nativity buntingAlso finished and just now wrapped is a Nativity bunting.  My in-laws have a triple window in their dining room that the small Christmas tree decorated in Nativity ornaments sits in front of (Note: this is one of FIFTEEN trees my MIL decorates. Yowza!).  Not much happens over the tree, so I made this to hang in front of the valance and add a little more interest to the window.

I just used silhouette shapes for the various figures and gradients of Kona blue solids.

(Side note: I spelled silhouette right on the first try! It’s a Christmas miracle!)

Lee is taking a break from hosting WIP Wednesday, so you’ll have to spend your standard WIP browsing time interacting with real people or something!  Catch you all for the Boxing Day Sew In on twitter using #BDSI!

Sunday Stash - Eeking

Although I feel as if I’ve been sewing all week, there’s pitiful little to show for it! Mostly because I forgot to take pictures of most of it.

I made two small notepad wallets to pair with giftcards for teacher gifts, and two stockings for the pets (one for Fred and one for the cats), a mini quilt for a friend, a storage bag for the quilt I donated to Daisy’s raffle, and a mini quilt I can’t show pictures of yet.

In “unfinished” projects, however, there’s been LOTS more progress - I finished up steps 3 (on the left below) and 4 (below on right) for the Grand Illusion mystery, and I finished the top and back for Mum Medallion. So there!

Here is the center for Mum Medallion; there is a 2″ maroon inner border and a 9″ green/maroon print outer border on it now as well.

HtbaS - Episode 207

I’m back! I talk about my ghetto fabulous new stove, cats, funny travel stories, emergency school runs, quilting, and a bunch of other stuff.

Here’s the “Ewe go girl” mini I reference:

Grand Illusion step 3 is done!

WIP Wednesday - Appearance of Slacking

Nina is totally phoning it in for WIP Wednesday. These strips aren’t going to sew themselves!

I had a couple time-sensitive deadlines for holiday gifts I needed to finish up in advance of diving into finishing up part 3 for the Grand Illusion Mystery, but I can’t show them until after they are received.  Hence, a picture of a pile of strips for Grand Illusion. Other people have made more progress, and you can see them at Bonnie’s linkup.

The good news is that I have one (or three?) more small gifts to finish and then I will focus on Grand Illusion at my guild sew-in tomorrow night. Whew.  You can see even more WIPs on Lee’s blog.

Sunday Stash - Bupkis

As expected, I have a big ol’ SQUAT to report for usage this week.  I finished almost two rows of my EPP quilt, though, so I’m on row 9 of 13.  I had to go to JoAnn’s this week since fleece was on sale and there’s a Christmas present I need to make with it (doesn’t count in the stash since fleece is quilting cotton). While I was there I checked out the red tag sale, and they had a Denyse Schmidt print in the navy/teal colorway, which is totally my jam, for $3 a yard, so I bought the entire 4 yards left on the bolt. Booyah!

Of course I’m also behind on my Bonnie Hunter mystery from Friday, but I’m working on some of that tonight before bedtime.

  •  Used this Week: 0 yards
    • Sad trombone!
  • Used year to Date: 321.75 yards
  • Added this Week: 4 yards
    • 4 yards of Denyse Schmidt.
  • Net Used for 2014: 194 yards
  • YTD Used for Charity: 116.25 yards (36% of total used)

Apropos of nothing, here’s a random picture from my walk this morning, the last morning at my parents’ house.

WIP Wednesday: Handwork Edition

It’s been a while since I posted my EPP project, the Tula Pink “Diamonds in the Sky” kit.  I’ve got rows 1-7 sewn together on home, and completed row 8 units on the plane this weekend.  That got me started on the row 9 units which I’ll keep making progress on this week.

Note: the rows are upside down in the picture. Alas!

Sunday Stash - A Whole Lotta Sewing

Grand Illusion step 2Not a ton of usage logged this week for finished projects, although I did sew a whole lot of stuff with the Bonnie Hunter Grand Illusion Mystery!  I finished my jewelry keeper and two headbands, and a pantload of these things for the mystery quilt; for this purpose, 1 pantload = 100 units. See other quilters’ progress on Bonnie’s link-up.

We also had block pick up for Saturday Sampler, so have the final block for Mum Medallion and the 7th block for the Bonnie & Camille quilt. The Mum Medallion block will get sewn into the rest of the top (which is pieced with partial seams around the big hole where this block will go), and then quilted on a long arm (ideally, since it’s a pretty quilt!).
